AMC Demolition and Renovation of OR and PACU – C Basement

Albany Medical Center is the region’s largest teaching hospital and the only level one trauma center in the area. The main campus of Albany Medical Center is located on New Scotland Avenue in Albany and additionally, AMC provides public healthcare services at several satellite offices throughout the region. AOW was selected as the general contractor to complete an approximate 46,000 square foot demolition and renovation of the C building basement operating room suite built originally by AOW’s Owner, Dick Oliver, over 40 years ago. The Renovation Phase was originally scheduled aggressively to complete over a 4 month time period, and was quickly changed to 3 months once the renovations began to accommodate the need for surgical services to resume sooner. The new basement operating room suite will, in total, house 6 orthopedic ORs, 4 pediatric ORs, 3 general ORs, 2 procedure rooms, and over 20 Patient Area Care Unit (PACU) beds.
Approximately 32,000 square feet will be completed in phase 1 of construction, including the orthopedic ORs, procedure rooms, and dedicated laboratory space. Phase two work includes the completion of the general OR’s, a conference room, additional laboratory space, and offices.
Coordination directly with the Owner has been crucial to the completion of this time-intensive project to assure all milestones are met or exceeded. All work is being completed adjacent to existing, highly-functioning operating rooms; low to no-impact on the daily functions of the hospital is an absolute requirement as is insuring patient and staff health & safety. Although it can be challenging, the preservation of pressure levels, cleanliness, and high air quality has been pertinent to the completion of this project.

The project will be valued over $15,000,000 when complete. The design team consists of Hyman Hayes Associates, LLC and ICOR Design Consultants.
