Saratoga Hospital Radiation Oncology & LINAC Expansion
Saratoga Hospital’s Radiation Oncology Center Addition and Renovation was undertaken in order to meet the growing needs of patients requiring radiation treatment. The Owner negotiated the contracted work directly with AOW, as AOW built the original Radiation Oncology Department.
The scope of the project included a 3,000 square foot addition to accommodate a new linear accelerator and auxiliary space required due to an influx of patients. The construction called for 4-foot wide foundation walls to support a Veritas Vault, built in the field, after the shell of the building was completed. Close coordination with MEP subcontractors was especially critical during the equipment installation provided by Varian.
Upon completion of the addition, phased interior renovations were undertaken to provide the space with updated finishes and alter room layouts to better accommodate the added space.
Winter conditions, groundwater, and an existing underground ledge all posed problems during the excavation and foundation installation. Vibration during construction impacted the existing linear accelerator laser and equipment precision, which required close coordination directly with patient care staff. All work above the existing roof line had to be carefully scheduled with the Owner due to the potential for radiation exposure.
